Letesenbet Gidey
a world class long distance athlete winning multiple medals in different international competitions. At age 17, she won the junior race category at the 2015 World Cross Country Championships. She retained this title in 2017 to take a bronze medal in the senior race in 2019. She currently holds women world records for 5000 and 10,000 meters.
Mahlet GebreGiyorgis
was born in Mekelle, the capital city of Tigray, in August 1986. Mahlet, with an inborn vocal virtuosity, commenced the art of music in Mekelle. Among her songs, a single named “Beyneye Terife” won her the 2005-2006 Tigray All Arts Award (TARTA), which was organized by the Mega Creative Arts Center in 2005.
Monalisa Abrha
A teenager who survived a gender based sexual violence (GBSV), physical and psychological harm of invading troops in tigray She doesn’t want to be silent and believes as long as rape remains hidden and shameful, recovery is impossible. Since then Monalisa became a symbol of courage and determination and a fighter for women’s rights. Many local and international media outlets interviewed her at the time
Dr Timnit Gebru
born in Addis Ababa, is a computer scientist who advocates for diversity in technology and co-founder of Black in AI, a community of Black researchers working in artificial intelligence (AI). She is the founder of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR). Timnit has been recognized widely for her expertise in technology and artificial intelligence. She was named one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders by Fortune and one of Nature‘s ten people who shaped science in 2021, and in 2022, one of Time‘s most influential people.
Dr Vandana Shiva
Indian physicist, scholar, activist, food sovernighty advocate, ecofeminist and author. She received MA in Philosophy of Science from Guelph University, Ontario, in 1976. The thesis “Hidden Variables and Non-locality in Quantum Theory” earned her a doctorate from the department of philosophy at the University of Western Ontario in 1978. Shiva founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Natural Resource Policy (RFSTN). She has worked in a wide range of different fields inspiring change globally. Her activism is rooted in promoting counter-development and supporting grassroots networks, women’s rights and ecology.
Fetlework Gebregziabher
a graduate of London school of economics and a freedom fighter. She joined the popular liberation struggle against the Derg in 1979, and since then she has served in different high ranking positions. She was central committee member of party, deputy chairperson and vice president of Tigray, Ethiopia. She was the Trade and Industry minister of Ethiopia.
Andenet Assefa (Ogethi)
A strong young women activists who has a pure heart of humanity. She has been restlessly helping young women in Tigray who are victim of the horrific rape used as a weapon of war. She believes Being voice for someone who has been blocked out of the world and kept in darkness is rewarding spiritually. As a young women her confident drive and determination is key to her success.
Gelila Reda
A self-taught abstract painter based in Sweden. She is best known for her colorful acrylic paintings and coffee art, in which she has held live paint sessions and solo exhibitions across the globe. Her distinctive style emanates strength, resilience, pain, balance, and culture. Her artwork has been exhibited in Oslo, U.S., and Belgium at the Campus Croep T Leuven.
Meaza Gidey
A young talented women who overcame an unstable childhood to become successful professional . she is a human rights activist, Community Organizer, international relations researcher and chief networking advisor at Omna Tigray. She is passionate about Social Justice in general and Gender Equality in particular.
Kasech Rayaweyti
The name Kasech means compensation. The gift you are given after a struggle has been complete. Kasech Rayaweyti (ካሕሳ) is an influential activist , critical thinker and adventurer living in Australia. Her main focus is the indigenous nations of the Horn of Africa. She aims to help build a society where people are free to be themselves both individually and as a cultural group. She is an avid thinker and rights defender of women who are victims of weponized rape. , especially since November 2020, when war broke out in Tigray.
Haben Girma
born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area from refugee families. she is the first deafblind graduate of Harvard Law University and a disability rights advocate. Haben believes disability is an opportunity for innovation, and she teaches organizations the importance of choosing inclusion. She has got at least four awards and recognitions. Haben Girma is a human rights lawyer advancing disability justice. Former U.S. President Obama has named Haben a White House Champion of Change. She received the Helen Keller Achievement Award, a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and TIME100 Talks.
